Lynette Smith
Lynette has been Hobart-based pianist, teacher, examiner and accompanist for the past 20 years. She holds a Bachelor of Music, a Masters of Music, a Bachelor of Teaching and the A.Mus.A and L.Mus.A diplomas in piano performance.
Lynette is a regular concert performer and chamber musician and has appeared several times with Virtuosi Tasmania, most recently performing the world premiere of a composition by Tasmanian composer Don Kay with fellow musicians David Nuttall and Phillip Jouglin. Amongst many of their concert appearances Lynette has performed on ABC FM’s Sunday Live programme with violist Janet Rutherford. Lynette, Janet and Helen Thomson recently performed the world premiere of the song cycle “Dark River” composed by Ralph Middenway.
Lynette is a piano teacher and accompanist at The Friends’ School and also runs a busy and thriving piano teaching studio in New Town.
Christopher Nicholas
Born in Sydney 1975, Chris completed a Bachelor of Music degree with Honours at Sydney University in 1996, studying with violinist Harry Curby. Chris continued to study music via a Graduate Diploma in Music 1997-1998 at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where he took lessons with Marina Marsden (SSO). During this time as a student, he also performed in seasons with the Australian Youth Orchestra (1996 World Tour & 1998 China Tour), as well as performing with the Sydney Opera House Orchestra 1995-1999 and with Oz Opera in 1998 at the Belvoir Street Theatre.
In 1999 Chris was successful in auditioning for the position of tutti violinist with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. For the past 26 years he has worked full time with TSO and has enjoyed many highlights as an orchestral musician including 3 Beethoven cycles, complete Beethoven and Mendelssohn recordings and tours of the Americas, Japan and China. As well as performing for the orchestra, he has also been involved with Virtuosi Tasmania playing in many chamber concerts in the 2000s and early 2010’s.
While classical music has always been Chris’s primary focus, he has also had a keen interest in popular music. While at University he enjoyed writing songs and playing keyboards in amateur bands. After moving to Tasmania, he has continued this interest through a long term collaboration with Hobart musicians Nara Dennis, Anita Schleebs, Tony Morgan and Greg Woodward in the “Strings on Fire” string quartet which specializes in arrangements of popular music from The Beatle’s to Coldplay. Since 2022 this group has performed numerous Candlelight Classics concerts in Hobart, with playlists ranging from Queen to Fleetwood Mac and Hans Zimmer.
Ivan James
Ivan James began cello studies with Phillipa Jackson at the age of ten and went on to study his BMus at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music under Lois Simpson, Nathan Waks and David Pereira. In 1982 Ivan was the Commonwealth winner of the string section of the ABC Instrumental and Vocal Competition, playing Bloch’s Schelomo with both the SSO and the QSO. From 1982-83 he was a casual cellist with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra until taking up a position with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. In 1984 Ivan was a soloist in Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with the TSO. Ivan is a dedicated chamber musician appearing with many ensembles including the Tasmanian Symphony Chamber players, Seraphim String Quartet and the Tasman String Quartet, he has played for Tas. Dance tours and many recordings for ABC Classic FM. He has played concerts in Hobart and throughout Tasmania most recently with Virtuosi Tasmania.
