Sheng-Yuan Lynch
Sheng-Yuan Lynch showed a great interest and talent in piano and classical music from the tender age
of three, learning the instrument by listening to recordings. In 2012, he began formal lessons with
Shan Deng, Senior Lecturer in Classical Piano at the School of Creative Arts and Media (Music) at
the University of Tasmania.
Graduating from The Hutchins School last year, he has excelled in his musical studies. Beginning
with his Grade 6 exam, he passed his Australian Musical Examination Board (AMEB) AMusA and
LMusA diplomas with the highest possible grades by the age of 12. As a graduate of the LMusA
diploma, he is one of the youngest candidates in Australia with this qualification. He is currently
undertaking his first year of Bachelor of Music at UTAS.
Fearless on stage, Sheng-Yuan has been invited to perform in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, and as
far abroad as Beijing. Some highlight appearances in the last few years include being a guest pianist
with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Macquarie Symphony Orchestra, and Tasmanian
Symphony Orchestra, as well as a performance alongside internationally renowned ballet superstar
Roberto Bolle. Prestigious recognitions include the 2022 Spirit Super People's Choice Award of the
Tasmanian Young Achiever Awards, the 2018 TSO Rising Star, as well as the runners-up for the
2022 Young Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition.
His contributions and taste run far and wide, performing in rock bands and repetiteuring for musical
theatre productions since he was 13, with his most recent being the Tasmanian premiere of Shrek the
Musical. Using music as a way to assist those in need, Sheng-Yuan has performed numerous charity
concerts, helping donate a total of almost $200,000 to various organizations since he was 11. He was
honoured with the 2021 City of Hobart Young Citizen of the Year in recognition of his philanthropic
efforts, and vows to continue his charitable endeavours leading into the future.
Since retiring from a research and academic career and moving to Tasmania, I have been able to devote time to a life-long interest in drawing and painting. When time allowed, I studied watercolour with Owen Thompson at the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney, etching with Seraphina Martin (USyd) and two years part-time at the Willoughby Art Centre, mentored by artist Mieke Cohen. I also have a Diploma in Botanical Illustrations from the Society of Botanical Artists (UK).
I am inspired by the beauty and uniqueness of the natural environment and the plants and animals found within it. I think of myself as an observer, recording and interpreting what I see in drawings, watercolours and etchings, with a special interest in the endemic species of Tasmania.
