Laura Thomson is a New Zealand/Australian violinist of superb calibre. She has received placings in many notable competitions including the New Zealand Young Musician of the Year and has gained the title of New Zealand Young Performer of the Year in 1999, she was one of the youngest recipients to receive a Civic Award for her Music Service to the Community from the City of Nelson (New Zealand). She received her Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music studying under Michele Walsh and then a further 2 years of study at the Australian National Academy of Music with principal mentors - John Harding and Wilma Smith. Ms Thomson has undertaken study in London at the Guildhall School of Music and has performed at the Barbican Hall with financial aid from the QCGU Exchange Programme Scholarship, she attended the 2003 international Salzburg Festival in Austria, studying with Israeli pedagogues - Yaer and Eyal Kess with help from an Australian Government Grant. As a chamber musician, Ms Thomson has collaborated with prominent Australian and New Zealand chamber musicians from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Virtuosi Tasmania, New Zealand String Quartet, Flinders Quartet, Silo String Quartet and soloist, Oleh Krysa. Many chamber music collaborations have been broadcast on various radio stations including ABC Classic FM, 4MBS and ClassicFM NZ. Ms Thomson is currently living and working in Hobart, Tasmania as a freelance musician perforing with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and Virtuosi Tasmania and also teaching violin and piano.
Born in Perth W.A., Dale began cello studies at 12 years of age with Louis Tomlin and later Sally Talbot. She completed a Bachelor of Music with honours at University of W.A in 1983 and a Graduate Diploma of Music from the Tasmanian Conservatorium in 1985, studying with Christian Wojtowicz.
She has worked for the West Australian Symphony, the Sydney Symphony, the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. She was a finalist in the Young Performer of the Year Competition 1986, playing the Dvorak Cello Concerto with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Chamber music has been interwoven through her orchestral career. The Hartz Piano Trio performed from 2007 to 2009 in Hobart, with Dale playing the cello. 2010 saw the release of a CD of Mendelssohn and Beethoven with Virtuosi Tasmania. In 2011 she looks forward to the inaugural year with Lucida Quartet.
